MinIO Removed the Admin UI — So I Built One for the Community (Free)
⚠️ The Breaking Change
MinIO just removed the admin UI from their Community Edition.
Yup — the clean, web-based interface to manage users, buckets, and policies is gone unless you upgrade to their commercial product, AIStor.
Many in the open source community didn’t see this coming. Others feel betrayed.
But here’s the thing: I don’t blame MinIO.
Companies need to make money. I get it.
But I also believe in building tools that keep freedom in the hands of indie devs, solopreneurs, and learners — without forcing them into enterprise pricing.
So I did something about it.
I Built a Free GUI to Replace the Removed Admin Panel
If you’re using MinIO Community Edition and feeling stuck with only the mc command-line tool…
I built a portable, open-source desktop app that wraps all the common admin actions you need — in a clean GUI.
No install. No fluff. Just a simple tool to help you:
- 🔐 Manage users and create access keys
- 🪣 Create and manage buckets
- 🌐 Set public/private permissions
- 🧾 Apply policies (with JSON editor support)
- 🔑 Test connections and save profiles

💡 Why Did MinIO Do This?
On February 26, 2025, MinIO co-founder Harshavardhana confirmed this change on GitHub:
“Admin actions in the console lack equivalent security protections… Without dedicated maintenance, this code risks introducing vulnerabilities.”
They’re shifting toward enterprise, and their new AIStor platform is now the home of that old GUI.
But what about us?
The indie builders. The open-source supporters. The ones hosting their own storage to cut cloud costs.
🧵 The Community Reaction
“Looks like the open source edition won’t have any admin option in the console from now on.”
— Dani on GitHub“They changed the license… and removed all features except basic browsing.”
— julienlau“Significant departure from the open-source spirit that made MinIO attractive.”
— LinkedIn comment
Some are switching to forks like OpenMaxIO. Others are stuck on old versions — no updates, no fixes.
I took a third route: Keep using MinIO CLI — but make it accessible again.
🚀 How to Get Back on Track with MinIO (in Minutes)
If you want to self-host MinIO and keep full control without paying for AIStor, here’s the plan:
- Deploy MinIO with Coolify (I show how in this guide):
👉 How to Self-Host S3 Storage with MinIO - Use
mcto set aliases, create users, and attach policies
(Everything you need is in the post) - Use my GUI wrapper for easier management
👉 No more memorizing commands
Here’s a preview of what it looks like:
- Tabs for connections, buckets, users, public access
- Ability to save profiles, view public URLs, and assign roles
- No login or backend — it’s a local app
📦 Built for You (and Free Forever)
This isn’t a business. It’s a contribution.
MinIO is amazing tech. But the open-source community deserves usable tools.
That’s why I built this as a portable app, under the MIT license, with everything stored locally.
You don’t even need to install it. Just download and run.
